Senior Backend Engineer

Our client is a fast-growing legal AI technology platform transforming how legal and professional services operate by combining frontier agentic AI with enterprise-grade platform capabilities. They are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their founding Toronto team to build foundational backend infrastructure and user-facing features for top law firms and enterprise customers globally. In this role, you will design, build, and scale backend infrastructure including authentication, permissions, feature flagging, notifications, and document management integrations. You will own and evolve the internal product platform layer that enables secure, reliable, and flexible experiences for enterprise collaboration. You'll partner cross-functionally with product, AI, and design teams to deliver delightful, enterprise-ready experiences.

Client's Tech Stack

Python, Go, REST/gRPC APIs, SQL/NoSQL databases, and cloud infrastructure.

What You'll Do:

• Design and build foundational backend infrastructure including authentication, permissions, feature flagging, notifications, and document management integrations.
• Build and evolve the internal product platform to accelerate development across multiple product lines and engineering teams.
• Lead development of enterprise-facing features, such as secure multi-party collaboration, cross-organization workflows, and robust admin controls.
• Maintain high standards for security, privacy, and system reliability, particularly in handling sensitive legal data.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, AI, design, and GTM teams to deliver delightful, enterprise-ready experiences.

What You'll Bring:

• 4+ years of backend-focused software engineering experience on platform and/or product-oriented teams.
• Experience working across the stack to ship user-facing features with measurable impact.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems, REST/gRPC APIs, databases, and scalable service architectures.
• Strong programming skills and general Computer Science knowledge.
• Valid Canadian work rights (no visa sponsorship available for this role).

It's a bonus if you have:

• Familiarity with or interest in enterprise SaaS patterns, such as role-based access control (RBAC) and third-party integrations.
